IP Ratings
Explained
The IP rating code classifies the degree of protection provided by the enclosure of an electrical item from foreign bodies, such as liquids, moisture, dust, dirt and foreign bodies. Defined by IEC/EN 60529, the standard was developed by the International Electro Technical Commission and is recognised all over the world.
The rating code is made up of the letters IP and two numbers, which indicate the 2 separate level of protection.
The first digit denotes its protection against the ingress of solid foreign objects.
The second digit denotes its protection against the ingress of liquids.
The numbers range from 0, which means there is no protection, through to 9, which means the item can be continuously submerged.
