Why is sign lighting important?

Sign lighting adds a unique element to any sign.

A clear and effective sign is a critical aspect of any business owner's marketing and operational strategy. It serves a range of practical purposes that can significantly impact the success of your business, but it’s prime purpose is to look appealing and tell people what you do and what you stand for.

It should say ‘we are here and this is what we offer you’

In this section, we'll dive into the reasons why businesses should prioritise the illumination of their signs & explore the practical applications that make it a worthwhile investment.

1. Increase Visibility and Attraction

As the saying goes ‘you don’t get a second chance to make a first impression’ and it’s that first impression that draws potential customers towards you. Properly lit signs are more visible and attract attention, especially in poor light or during the night. They help your business stand out, draw in footfall and increase the likelihood of converting passers by into customers.

2. Extend your Business Hours

Sign lighting allows you to extend your daytime business hours well into the evening and is vital for bars, restaurants, clubs and the rest of the night time economy.

3. Branding and Identity

Your brand is your Identity and you should take every opportunity to repeat it and reinforce the message, 24/7 if you can, even if you’re closed.

The right lighting of your sign & brand will help:

  • Grow your business.
  • Make yours the first name in your customer’s mind.
  • Potential customers find you easily.

4. Safety and Accessibility

Sign lighting enhances safety around your business by illuminating:

      • Forecourts
      • Entrances
      • Paths & parking areas

It ensures that customers can safely navigate your premises, which again  enhancing the overall visitor experience.

 5. Energy Efficiency and Sustainability

This maybe the biggest factor to consider. Historically, the lighting of signs (particularly large ones) was seen as an expensive luxury, both in terms of high electricity consumption and the ongoing maintenance of constantly replacing blown bulbs & tubes.

Things have changed radically over the last ten years or so with the continuing development Light Emitting Diodes (LED’s) for all forms of lighting.

At the time of writing, a 9 watt LED bulb produces the equivalent light to a 60 watt filament bulb, without any heat and lasts up to 25 times longer (25,000 hours for the LED against 750-1000 hours for a filament bulb).

The comparison between LED strip and fluorescent tubes is even more stark. LED strips typically last 50,000 to 100,000 hours while a fluorescent tube generally lasts only 7,000 to 15,000 hours.

Did You Know?

- That the light a filament bulbs produces is a by product of turning most of the energy into heat, whereas a LED light turns almost 100% of the energy into light.

- Typically, you will save 80% of your energy by switching to LED’s.

- Filament bulbs & fluorescent tubes use mercury & other toxic materials making them very environmentally unfriendly. Whereas LED’s don’t & are easily recycled.

- Switching to LED’s will help reduce your carbon footprint, something that customers are increasingly demanding.

- Fitting a photocell switch will further reduce your energy consumption & take away the hassle of ensuring your signs are illuminated when it gets dark.

In conclusion, as a business owner, investing in sign lighting is a practical and strategic decision that can benefit your business in numerous ways. This is because sign lighting:

  • Enhances visibility
  • Extends business hours
  • Reinforces branding
  • Improves safety and accessibility
  • Increases customer engagement
  • Contributes to energy efficiency and you Carbon Footprint

We suggest that applying these principals will increase your customer base and at the same time reducing your costs, which both increase your bottom line.
